Wild Dog EXCLUSION

A well designed, constructed and maintained wild dog exclusion fence can provide an effective first line of defence against wild dogs and other invasive species.

Wild dogs are intelligent animals that can quickly identify and take advantage of breaches or weak spots in a fence.

Research has shown that when a wild dog approaches a fence with the intention of getting
to the other side, it will:

  • first, try to push through the fence, at or below snout-level;
  • second, try to burrow under the fence;
  • very rarely, try to climb or jump the fence as this is a learned behaviour

Well-designed and constructed fences are essential infrastructure on any property … and are especially important when it comes to wild dog exclusion.

Wild Dog Exclusion Fence

FENCING IS KEY

A Westonfence™ plain wire fence with every second wire electrified has been successfully used by many producers in their endeavours to exclude wild dogs.

The main advantages of plain wire electric fencing includes:

  • comparatively low cost compared to other fencing methods;
  • more easily erected, especially in hilly and heavily vegetated areas where the fence line has to accommodate uneven ground;
  • less risk to the entire fence in a flood

SECURING THE PERIMETER

Our range of exclusion fences have evolved through experience and understanding of animal behaviour.

One recommendation for wild dog exclusion uses the Westonfence™ D10 with wires spaced closer together “down low” at the main point of impact.

The bottom 4 wires are positioned at 115mm apart, with live wires at 140mm and 370mm to prevent animals trying to push through the fence.

We recommend placing the steel posts at 10m apart with droppers at 3.3m spacings.

The height of the D10 (1300 mm) prevents invasive species trying to go over the fence … with additional live wires at 645mm and 935mm ensuring animals learn to respect the fence.

Remember, electric fencing is a physical and psychological barrier that relies on wild dogs learning that touching the fence is a painful experience.

Check your electric fence regularly to make sure it is working correctly and spray vegetation along the fence line as necessary to ensure the fence is performing to its optimal level.

RETROFIT SOLUTIONS

An alternative, where an existing fencing is in good repair and not in need of replacing is using an electrified Westonfence™ Leaning Offset or D5 Dropper at 45° angle to provide extra security.

This can be retrofitted to existing fencing and electrified easily for wild dog exclusion.

Again, regular checks and maintenance are key to ensuring total exclusion from native and invasive species. However, maintenance is minimal with the Westonfence™ system compared to other fencing systems.

Westonfence™ has a range of versatile options available for securing your external perimeter.

Other options include our 8-Line fence which is suitable for containing livestock and general, all-round exclusion.

The Westonfence™ system is adaptable to suit your specific farming enterprise depending on what you’re trying to keep in … and the invasive species you need to keep out.
